  some useful websites for authors

  www.publishme.co.nz

The world of publishing is changing fast and more authors are becoming publishers. PublishMe has been developed to help authors maximise their creative work so that they can be effectively and profitably marketed to appropriate audiences in New Zealand and overseas.  It's free to set up your author profile and begin the publishing process - from planning to selling.

  www.authors.org.nz

The official website of NZSA—The New Zealand Society of Authors (Pen NZ Inc) Te Puni Kaituhi O Aotearoa.  NZSA is the principal advocate for the professional interests of writers, and is open to writers of every genre, published or unpublished.  If you are serious about your writing, NZSA is the group for you.  As well as providing support and advocacy to members, NZSA maintains this wonderful website that is full of resources, many of which you can access even if you are not a member.

  www.learningmedia.co.nz/nz/online/authorsartists

Learning Media is the organisation that edits and publishes the iconic New Zealand School Journal and other school resources.  Many a writer has got a start in published life writing for the Journal (the likes of Margaret Mahy), and it continues to provide bread and butter for many writers.  Contributions from freelance authors, illustrators, photographers and performers are a crucial source of material for Learning Media, which is always keen to encourage new authors and artists.  This part of the Learning Media site provides online resources for contributors.

  www.zeroland.co.nz/nz_writers.html

Part of the Arts on the Web (Zeroland) web directory, New Zealand Writers is a useful directory of and for New Zealand Poets, Writers and Novelists.  Although not well set out, it has links to New Zealand writing awards/competitions, events, and other useful resources.

  some useful websites for Buddhists

  www.buddhanet.net

Buddhanet is the world's largest Buddhist internet site.  Use its directories to find Buddhist centres wherever you are in the world.  There are plenty of Buddhist resources here for all ages, including information about Buddhist women.

  dbc.dharmakara.net/NZcentres.html

A directory of Buddhist centres throughout New Zealand.  Centres are listed firstly by school, then  (Tibetan/Theravada/Other), then by location/region.  The site is reliant on the centres notifying the webmaster of changed details, so some incorrect details and typos do creep in.  It is, however, still as useful resource.

  some useful websites for gardeners

  www.bestgardening.com

A wonderful resources for New Zealand gardeners, this has gardens, feature articles, design ideas, a plant notebook, practical gardening ideas, garden events and much more.  It has some lovely resources for children about gardening and nature.

  www.nzgardener.co.nz

The website of New Zealand Gardener Magazine, NZ's top selling gardening mag (since 1944, apparently).  The Get Growing, Hints & Tips, and Win! sections are well worth a look.  Yes, there is information about ornamental plants, but there has been a swing more recently toward edible gardening for NZ families, which I applaud given the current economic and ecological climate.  One of my own recipes has appeared in the NZ Gardener's special collector's edition, Homegrown 2: Live off your land for less.

some general websites that I recommend

  www.fishpond.co.nz
A fabulous New Zealand-based online bookstore. You can find plenty of good reading material here.

  www.bennysbooks.co.nz
A great, locally owned New Plymouth bookshop that supports local talent. Julia, the lovely owner, has been really good to local self-publishing authors, purchasing books for stock and hosting book launches. Great stuff!
