editorial services

I am an experienced editor and proof-reader who can provide a range of editorial services to fit your requirements.  I recommend that all authors have their books copy edited, and then proof read at a later stage in the process.

I can provide a range of editorial services to fit your requirements and for a variety of audiences, from children and young people to professionals and academics.  You will find me easy to work with, as I have a professional approach to editing and excellent communication skills.  I will work closely with you to ensure that my editing style fits your requirements.

My copy editing, structural editing and proof-reading services are very thorough.  However, if you are a self-publisher, you have the final say on what you do with my suggestions, amendments and advice, and you have complete control over what changes you do or don't make to the documents.

You will find me easy to work with, as I have a professional approach to editing and excellent communication, and I always make constructive use of feedback in my own work.  I will work closely with you to ensure that my editing style fits your requirements.

With all of the services I offer, I work hard to help you make your manuscript the best that it can be.  I am happy to provide you with a quote or estimate for copy editing or structural editing based on a sample of your work.  Please email me for details.

  Copy editing

My copy editing service involves checking spelling, grammar, sentence structure/syntax, consistency of terminology, punctuation, and correcting typographical errors.  It entails checking the narrative flow of the document, the sequence of ideas, consistency of style, and voice.  I also ensure that there are no leaps of logic that might alienate your reader or audience.  I can edit to a range of styles to suit your requirements.

Some publishers require manuscripts to be edited to specific conventions.  The main conventions I use are Style Book: A guide for New Zealand writers and editors (5th edition, 1995, by Wallace and Hughes), and the Chicago Manual of Style (15th Edition), but I am happy to work with any conventions you choose.

Please email me for a quote or estimate.  Tell me a little about your project, including the genre, word count, and your target audience.  I look forward to working with you!

  Structural editing

My structural editing service ensures that manuscripts are easy to comprehend and flow well.  It entails identifying poor sequencing, leaps of logic or inconsistencies in the text, weak characters or scenes, and redundant or distracting scenes or material.  I ensure that your text is well written, easy to follow and not alienating to your readers, all the while maintaining your unique 'voice' as a writer.

As a structural editor, I consider whether parts of your manuscript need restructuring to make it into a really marketable book.  In some cases, an author will have all of the elements, but they may not be presented in an style that will best capture the reader's attention.  A structural edit may involve rearranging parts of the manuscript to provide better integration, making it better able to grasp the reader's attention.

Once the structural editing is complete, I will be happy to give you help over the phone or by email to work through amendments and any additions (additions are likely to be a few sentences or paragraphs that provide context or link ideas and help pull the work together).  It is important that a structural editor does not simply send back an author's manuscript and expect the manuscript to be worked over in a vacuum.

Particularly at the very final stages of cleaning up the loose ends in a manuscript, it is important that you have someone who has a good grasp on the document and your intended market to speak with, even if it is only for motivation!

I am happy to provide you with a quote or estimate for structural editing based on a sample of your work.  Please email me for a quote or estimate, telling me a little about your project, including the genre, word count, and your target audience.  I look forward to working with you to make your manuscript the best that it can be!

  Proof-reading

I recommend that authors have their work proof-read after editing and before the work goes to print, as this saves costly proof copies and reprints.

Proof-reading should be a final stage in the publishing process that picks up any persistent problems, including those that  may have crept in during editing (e.g. the insertion of a double  full stop during amendments to the text).

Proof-reading leaves a  much lighter 'footprint' on the manuscript than copy-editing does.  Although a proof reader will likely mark-up problem  areas, any more is beyond his or her brief, and this is not always helpful at an early stage when you want to be working at making  your manuscript the best that it can be.  Although it should be thorough, proof-reading anticipates that the majority of problems with the text have been ironed out during the editorial stage of  the pre-publishing process.  This is because a good editor will  have ensured that the manuscript has reached the stage where only a few persistent errors should still be identifiable.

Proof-reading is often done at the actual lay-up or proof copy stage, when a proof-reader looks over the proof copy for you to make sure that everything, including the lay-out and typesetting, is fine before you give the go-ahead to print.  The actual timing of the proof-reading (the stage in the process at which the proof-reading occurs) is up to you, but I do recommend waiting until the book is at least in lay-up form so that any design problems are identified at this stage, prior to your proof copy being printed.

I can provide you with a quote or estimate for proof-reading work based on a word count.  I have a high degree of literacy and undertake proof-reading work on written materials aimed at academics, professionals, children and young people, and the general public.

Please email me for a quote or estimate.  Tell me a little about your project, including the genre, word count, and your target audience.  Please note that I will only undertake proof-reading on material that has already been copy-edited.
